Sexuality is deeply personal and sexual inhibition is a complex issue that affects many individuals and refers to a person’s reluctance or inability to engage, in sexual activity, or express their sexual desires. However, societal norms often dictates what is acceptable, and in doing so, a variety of factors, including psychological, cultural, and emotional influences can lead to a person becoming sexually inhibited.  Although sex is a universal experience, there are some individuals who feel the need to judge others who embrace their sexuality.  Why does this happen?

Psychological Factors

Many individuals experience sexual inhibition due to anxiety or fear. This might include, fear of judgment.  Because there is no doubt that having a fear of judgement or worrying about how others perceive them, can be extremely stifling to a person’s sexual expression.

One of these psychological factors is trauma.  When an individual experiences some form of trauma, especially sexual trauma, it can profoundly affect a person’s relationship, with sex, in a healthy capacity.  Survivors may struggle, with intimacy and trust.  Unfortunately, for some, this leads to significant sexual inhibitions, which have a negative effects on their relationship.  Having time to heal and a patience partner is very important, in these sensitive situations.  For a person to even begin to heal from traumatic experiences, it is necessary that they are provided, with the unlimited time as well as emotional and professional support.

Another psychological factor is that of rejection, can shape a person’s sexual confidence.  Rejections can be powerful and in some instances, they create almost unbreakable barriers that make it difficult, for an individual to engage openly, in healthy sexual relationships.

There is also the issue of a person experiencing anxiety or elevated levels of stress, which will also spill over into sexual relationships. This will create problems such as performance anxiety and can be very debilitating.  The fear of not meeting expectations generates avoidance and in the end, making it difficult to connect with partners.

Also, a condition like depression is a contributing factor to sexual inhibition, which dampens sexual desires and arousal.  However, with adequate medical advancements and more awareness, medications can be implemented for the treatment, of depressive conditions.  So, not only is it important that depression is addressed, for the overall health, of an individual, it is essential for the improvement of a person’s sexual well-being.

Body Image or Low Self-Esteem

Body image or low self-esteem can render a person to be sexually inhibited.  When it comes to a person’s body image, there is a higher tendency to have concerns about their physical appearance thus hindering their sexual confidence.  Unfortunately, this is a type of ‘invisible wall‘ or low self-esteem, prevents a person from being sexually comfortable.  Because if someone feels unattractive, they are more likely to withdraw from sexual experiences altogether.

Having a high self-esteem or a valued self-worth is not only important, in achieving your goals, but it is closely linked to sexual expression.  Those with low self-esteem may feel unworthy of intimacy or pleasure and these feelings may manifest into a reluctance to engaging, in sexual activities, with their partner because there is the fear of feeling that they are simply not good enough.

Cultural Influences & Social Factors

Cultural and Religious Influences also play a significant role and the strict teachings are imposed, concerning sexuality.  Adhering to these beliefs can create internal conflicts and sometimes lead to feelings, of inadequacy or fear, about their own sexual desires.  There are religious teachings that contribute to this mindset and those who adhere to traditional values may, at times, struggle to accept differing viewpoints.  However, there are societies that do promote conservative views, on sexuality, but they can also instill feelings of shame or guilt.

A family’s background is another component that can have an impact on a person’s sexual inhibitions.  Families that avoid discussing sex or express negative views can instill some form of fear or embarrassment, which creates lasting sexual inhibitions and leading to a reluctance to express sexual desires openly.  They have been branded, with the idea that there are certain taboos that are considered off-limits thus making open human sexual discussions difficult or unacceptable.

Judgement

Concerns about how others perceive them can be paralyzing and leading to a fear of judgement.  The fear, of being judged or ridiculed, can prevent individuals from exploring their sexuality.  Unfortunately, there are many individuals who will worry about how others perceive them.  This form of judgment often stems from an internal fear and when people encounter lifestyles or choices that differ from their own, they may react defensively.  The worry of being judged leads to avoidance of sexual situations, resulting in inhibition.  This fear can manifest as criticism or disdain.  In the end, judge no one, at anytime, for any reason.

Another fact is that of insecurity projections.  Unfortunately, there are those individuals that project their insecurities onto others.  Individuals, such as these, are uncomfortable, with their own sexuality and will project that discomfort and jealousy onto others.  Because in their minds, by criticizing others, they are diverting  attention from their own personal sexual struggles.  Misery always loves company.

Consequences of Sexual Inhibition

Being sexually inhibited can affect relationships and personal happiness.  It may lead to:

  • Frustration:  Unmet desires can cause stress and dissatisfaction.
  • Relationship Strain:  Partners may feel disconnected or unfulfilled.

Lack of Education

The role of education is key to reducing judgment and having lack of sexual education is the core of uninformed misconceptions about sex.  Individuals who are uninformed may feel confused or fearful about their desires.  Without knowledge, they may feel unprepared or anxious about sexual situations.  Having open discussions about sexuality can foster understanding because when people learn about different sexual orientations and practices, they become more accepting.  It is because of this lack of knowledge that creates barriers to sexual expression but it is knowledge that will dispel myths and break down those sexual barriers.

Overcoming Sexual Inhibition

Addressing sexual inhibition is possible.  Here are some strategies:

  • Open Communication:  Discussing feelings with a partner can foster intimacy.
